The simplicity of the local life in the Amalfi region provides a breath of fresh air for those arriving from busy cities and hectic lifestyles. The local residents of Pontone are extremely friendly and always greet a passer by with ‘Buongiorno’. Access into mountain villages has been mainly by foot or mule for centuries, so there is a network of stone paths and steps leading just about anywhere.
The village of Pontone has an ancient history, at one time being the most important centre on this part of the coast, before the growth of Amalfi. The village has a charming simplicity with its small, intimate square providing a place to sit and chat with the locals in the summer.
Pontone is placed at the crossroads of many ancient footpaths
coming from Ravello and Scala and leading down to Amalfi and
Atrani. There is also a footpath leading to the Valle delle
Ferriere, an area of unspoilt, outstanding natural beauty. From
Pontone one can walk for miles over the hills going through
lemon groves or beech woods with breathtaking views everywhere. |
